Our giant rolling boombox, built in 2025, is part sound system and part art piece. It features dual 18” subs, a center speaker disguised as a cassette deck, and an interactive light display synced to music. The project is modular, collaborative, and open to contributions—painting, electronics, design, and more. 80s nostalgia meets DIY absurdity, rolling through the streets (legally, somehow).
It is designed to eventually be the main sound system at Colab, the San Diego burner warehouse, but will be on tour before then, so reach out if you have mobile sound needs!
In terms of the sound system, the subs are modified from the VBSS design using GRS 18PT-8 drivers tuned to 20 Hz. The top is a EV ZLX-12P. I would describe the sound as "wedding reception" volume, but with more bass. Boombox has a small mixing board, and includes a microphone, bluetooth, and various inputs (RCA, 1/4 TRS, XLR, 3.5mm headphone jack).
If more sound is required we can augment with a pair of QSC K10 tops and a QSC KW118 sub.
Boombox can run off grid for up to six hours at a time.
Custom built subwoofers, tuned to 20 Hz (deeper, less loud).
Finished sub.
First audio test.
